Dear KJS Families,
At Kowloon Junior School, student conferences are one of the ways that we report students’ progress, achievements and next steps in learning to parents. The purpose of the Student Conferences is to empower students to be actively responsible for the ownership of their learning and to promote reflection whilst enabling them to communicate their learning and celebrate progress and achievement with their parents
Students are responsible for leading the conference, and also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents. This involves students demonstrating their understanding through a variety of different learning situations.
The conference involves the students discussing and reflecting upon examples of their learning that they have previously chosen to share with their parents. These examples have been previously selected with guidance and support from the teacher. The students identify strengths and areas for improvement, a process which enables parents to gain a clear insight into the kind of learning their child is doing and offers an opportunity for you to discuss it with your child.
Student Led conferences overview:
All conferences and sessions will be held in person on 27/04 (3-6 p.m.) and 28/04 (all day, no school for students except when they are attending their conference)
The Gateway will be used for sign-up from 5 pm on Thursday 30th March for those families who have multiple children in school (sibling priority)
All other parents can sign up from 5pm on Friday 31st March
You will book a 45 minute slot in your child's classroom which will allow you to engage in a variety of learning experiences with your child. This 45 minutes will also include a 10 minute meeting with the class teacher and your child (a 3 way conference).
The PE and Music teams will run practical sessions for Year 3-6 parents throughout the day. Years 1 and 2 had this opportunity previously. There is no booking required. You can visit these before or after your meeting with the class teacher.
The students in year 4-6 will be able to show their Chinese learning in their own classroom space
All of the above information can also be found on this short explainer video.
To help to make this as successful as possible the Vice Principals will be holding a Zoom Q and A session regarding Student Led Conferences between 1:00 and 1:30 on Tuesday 18th April. This is not an information session but will be an opportunity for parents to seek any clarification required. There is no need to sign up to this event. Simply use this Zoom link https://zoom.us/j/4497452097

Dear KJS families,
Seasonal influenza is an acute illness of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses. It is usually more common in periods from January to March/April in Hong Kong. Symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle pain, fatigue and headache; some may also have vomiting and diarrhoea.
According to the CHP guideline, if your child has upper respiratory infection symptoms, fever, diarrhoea or vomiting, they should be refrained from school until they are recovered. This enables children who are unwell to fully rest and recover and also prevents the spread of illness throughout the school.
Hope everyone stays strong and healthy.

Dear KJS Families,
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that at KJS we strongly encourage parents to contact the school and allow school staff to resolve issues regarding other KJS students that occur during school hours or on school buses. This approach supports the whole school community in fostering positive and respectful relationships.
In connection with the abovementioned message, I would like to specify that this includes parents boarding school buses to address issues. This sort of behaviour can be quite unsettling and even frightening for some students, and it is misaligned with the positive role modelling that we aspire to do at KJS.
Kind regards,
Dr. Jamie Schmitz - Acting Principal
Dear Year 6 families,
Next week we will be teaching part of our Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) curriculum. The lessons will be focussing on puberty and children being accurately able to identify male and female body parts.
As you may be aware from previous years the RSE curriculum is a curriculum that has been developed by a team of ESF staff with consultation from global experts. It encompasses learning in this area from Kindergarten through to Year 13. The rationale for the curriculum and the important part it plays in learning is in the shared presentation.
We are sharing with you the presentation so that you are aware of the elements of the program and are able to sufficiently support your child. You will notice in the presentation that we will refer to previous learning in Year 5, as well as using picture books and animations to ensure understanding at an appropriate developmental level. The resources shared in the presentation are examples of what we will use and are not intended to be exhaustive.
If you have any questions regarding the content please contact your child’s teacher or Mr Fay who oversees the RSE curriculum at KJS.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 team
Dear Year 6 families,

Dear KJS Families,
I am pleased to share with you the ESF calendar for the 2023/2024 school year. Please note that it is technically still a draft version because the 2024 public holidays have not yet been gazetted by the Hong Kong Government. We will update you should there be any changes after this process.

Dear KJS Families and Staff,

Dear parents,
The excitement is building for our camps this term and the team are finalising all of the arrangements. Thank you to those parents who have already enrolled their children using APA's enrollment form. If you haven't completed it yet I would encourage you to do that as soon as you can.
I have arranged with APA that they will lead a Zoom presentation for parents and children on Monday 13th March between 5:30pm - 6:00pm. This will be to share details of the activities, arrangements, kit requirements and to answer any questions that you may have. We will facilitate a Q and A through the chat function so that you have all of the information that you need to support your child with this exciting experience. The zoom link is below.
You don't have to sign up in advance for this meeting. Please just join us, with your children, at 5:30 on Monday.
Kind regards,
The Year 4 Team
Dear parents,

We plan a big fair as usual for early next school year.
Dear KJS Families,
It was lovely seeing the smiling faces of many of our students this morning, so I would like to expand a little on KJS' stance on mask wearing after the removal of the mask-wearing mandate.
While there is no conclusive evidence at this stage that mask wearing impedes language and social development in children, research does show that mask wearing makes it more challenging for children to read social and emotional cues. Additionally, masking wearing makes it more difficult for students to communicate verbally and non-verbally.
I respectfully ask that you consider the abovementioned information if you have decided to continue to send your child to school wearing a mask. As stated yesterday, I acknowledge your right to make a choice, however, I think that it is important that you have enough information to do so.
Please rest assured that we will support our students in terms of good hygiene habits and the potential fear associated with mask removal through a social-story apporach. Also, if you would like additional support for your child, then please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher directly.
Kind regards,
Dr. Jamie Schmitz

Dear KJS Families,
As you may have heard already, the Hong Kong mask-wearing mandate will be removed, beginning tomorrow. This announcement applies to schools, including KJS.
We are very excited at the prospect of being able to connect with one another using simple facial expressions, such as smiling. We also acknowledge and respect the choice that everyone has to continue to wear a mask if they so choose.
Kind regards,
Dr. Jamie Schmitz

Dear KJS Families,
You may recall that I recently shared that we would reinstate a food provider at KJS in the near future. The reinstatement of a food provider based on all of the priorities I previously mentioned - food quality, good value for money, and environmentally sustainable practices - will still happen, however, the process will take a little longer than we first thought. This is because we have decided to go through a full tendering process with the support of the ESF Centre team to ensure that we adhere to the highest Hong Kong health and safety standards.
I appreciate that this delay will be felt as disappointing news to some of our families, however, we are not willing to compromise on the wellbeing of KJS students and this process will support us in meeting that aim.

Dear KJS Families,
It has come to my attention, that some students are using their smartwatches on school buses to record video footage of other students without their consent. Please note that KJS does not support the recording of any video footage without consent on any device in or outside of school.
I would be very grateful if you could reinforce the school's stance and help our students to understand the importance of respecting everybody's right to privacy.

Dear KJS Families,
To complete the ESF Stakeholder Survey, please use the link sent to you individually by the ESF Centre last week.
I respectfully ask that each and every family take a few minutes to complete the survey. It is sometimes the case with feedback surveys, that those who are generally satisfied don't feel like they have useful feedback to share. From a KJS perspective, it is really important that both strengths and gaps are identified through this feedback survey process. This is because the best way to develop is to use strengths to adjust, add, and eliminate where needed. It is also really important for KJS to find out what it needs to keep doing as a school.
Kind regards,
Dr. Jamie Schmitz - Acting Principal

Dear KJS Families,
I would like to share some additional information about the ESF Annual Stakeholder Survey that was opened yesterday.
It is sometimes the case with feedback surveys, that those who are generally satisfied don't feel like they have useful feedback to share. This is because the best way to develop is to use strengths to adjust, add, and eliminate where needed. It is also really important for KJS to find out what it needs to keep doing as a school.

Dear KJS Parents,
As school life is resuming to pre-covid practices, we would like to take this opportunity to evaluate the lunch provider service which has been suspended for some time.
We realise that this was past practice and convenient for many families, but in light of the fact that children have been bringing in their own food for a significant period, we have noticed some positive outcomes that counter balance the convenience of ordering lunches from an external vendor.
Not only is there significantly less food waste (90 kg per week plus 30 kg of container waste*) on campus, but it is also clear that students have choices of both hot and cold lunches and a variety and balance of nutritional food groups with low-zero wasteful packaging. Additionally, parents have been able to see exactly what their children have eaten due to all leftovers coming back home.
As we are teaching our students the importance of choices, impact and global citizenship, it is vital that we act accordingly and ensure our school models the values that we hope our students will learn and follow. This could be a time to take positive action.
We would appreciate a few minutes of your time to complete the attached survey to enable us to make a more informed decision.
Thank you,
KJS PTA and Senior Leadership Team

Dear KJS families,
Tomorrow your child is encouraged to wear traditional Chinese clothing or red colors to help celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year and the year of the rabbit. We will be having a Lion Dance in the morning followed by a Chinese New Year assembly in the afternoon.
Wishing you all a prosperous year of the Rabbit!

Dear KJS families,
Assessment is central to our goal of supporting students in the development of knowledge, conceptual understanding and transferable skills. One of the main goals of assessment is to have teachers and students who demonstrate assessment capability and parents and legal guardians who are informed about their child’s current learning targets and how best to support them in making progress. We aim to involve teachers and students collaboratively in monitoring, documenting, measuring and reporting on learning. This collaboration in turn helps to develop our students as reflective thinkers who are increasingly able to identify their own strengths and areas for development, taking initiative and action to set and achieve personal targets.
Our mid-year reports serve as one aspect of our multiple reporting opportunities throughout the year, along with 3-way conferences, student led conferences and unit reporting.
Details:
¨ Your child’s report will be available via the app tomorrow, Thursday after 5pm.
¨ To access the report please follow these instructions.
We strongly encourage you to sit with your child and review the report. This will hopefully lead to some useful discussions around your child’s strengths and stretches.
Wishing you all a prosperous year of the rabbit!

Dear parents,
Athletics days are back! After 3 years we are once again able to offer our younger students the chance to showcase their athletics skills off site at Perth Street Sports Ground.
Athletics Day for Year 1 will be held this Wednesday, January 11th.
Students will need to come to school in their PE kit with their water bottle and an easy to eat, healthy snack (no sweets or sugary drinks please).
Whilst this is great news for the students unfortunately due to restrictions on numbers at the venue; this year we will not be able to have parent spectators.
Kind regards,
Mr. Riddell
Dear KJS Families,
I hope that you all had an enjoyable holiday.
On behalf of the EDB, I would like to thank those of you who responded to the EDB survey. The KJS link below is still active, so I encourage you to complete the survey if you haven't already done so. The EDB is specifically seeking more feedback from families whose children receive Learning Enhancement (SEN) support.

Dear KJS Families,
I am pleased to announce that KJS will return to its previous dismissal time of 2:45 p.m. from 9/1/23 onwards. This has come about because being able to eat lunches in classrooms has enabled us to adjust the current timetable to maximise learning and teaching time for our students.
Please note that our bus companies have been informed of this change and will modify their schedules accordingly.
Kind regards,
Jamie
Dear Parents,
Thank you to those who have donated unwanted items that we can use for our play spaces in the new year. It really helps support a more sustainable approach.
I am just sending a reminder that anything being donated must be able to withstand harsh weather as it will be out in the open and not covered all of the time. Also, please do not send in anything that is broken or cracked. We are seeking previously loved and gently used sports equipment that can be used by the students during their play times.
Many thanks!

Dear KJS families,
This year we have students who have a severe nut allergy. Exposure to nut products for these children can trigger an anaphylactic reaction - a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention.
In order to keep the children safe, our school strongly recommends that nuts and nut products should not be brought to school or included in lunches or snacks for all students. As students sit in the same room to eat their lunch this is particularly important. Your support in this area is very much appreciated.
The safety and wellbeing of all children in our care is our priority.
Thank you so much for your ongoing cooperation and vigilance in ensuring a safe environment for all our students.

This is an Australian internationally acclaimed program and will be facilitated by Carolyn Aukafolau from our Learning Enhancement Team. At KJS we value the partnership that we have with parents and how we can develop this not only to support the wellbeing of students but also you, our parent community.
The seminars suggest strategies to promote positive, caring relationships between parents and children which help to develop effective management strategies for dealing with a variety of common developmental issues and childhood behavioural concerns. You will get the opportunity to enhance your knowledge skills and confidence to support your child in a variety of ways and you will learn how to use positive parenting strategies to encourage children to learn the skills and competencies they need to promote their health, development and wellbeing. Dear parents,
We are all getting very excited about camp on Monday. I have re-shared the information below as a reminder of the arrangements so you can help your children get the most out of the experience.
Enrolment form
I am very grateful to those who completed the enrolment form before the November 30th deadline. However, despite reminders there are still a number of parents who have not completed the enrolment form. This form is essential to attend camp and takes two minutes to complete. As shared before you can find your child's student ID under "Student Key" on Gateway.
If this form is not completed today (1st December) your child may not be able to attend camp on Monday. Please do this as a matter of urgency if you have not already done so.
Kind regards,
Ciarian Fay

Remember that this is an adventure-based program. Please do not pack your best clothes, as they are likely to get quite dirty. Leave your phones and other similar electronic devices at home – there will not be time to use them! Bring your watch but leave other jewelry at home, as you will only have to take it off for activities anyway. We recommend clearly labelling equipment with your name. And finally, you will not need much spending money, so please don’t risk losing it.

Dear Kowloon Junior School Community,
As you may know, we have been conducting a recruitment exercise over the past few months to find a permanent Principal for Kowloon Junior School. I wanted to write to you to provide you with an update and to invite you to take part in an important part of that process.
I am pleased to be able to tell you that we have now narrowed the selection to three final candidates. It is our goal to be able to formally appoint a finalist candidate by early December.
In order to achieve that and, as part of the final stage of the selection process, we are inviting the Kowloon Junior School Community to meet the three candidates on Wednesday, 30th November 2022 from 6 – 8:00 PM at the school.
Each candidate will make a presentation and be prepared to answer questions. You will also be able to provide feedback on the candidates at the end of their presentations.
If you would like to attend this session please RSVP by clicking on this link https://bit.ly/3EimyoG and completing the form.
If you have questions about the recruitment process, please contact Karen Ng by email at
Karen.ng@esfcentre.edu.hk

seeing you at the community presentations later this month.

Dear KJS families,
In providing a safe and healthy learning environment for your child, it is important for every KJS family to report your child's RAT result and body temperature via VLE in our ESF app every morning before they come to school.
If your child feels unwell, please keep them home to rest and seek medical advice. According to the CHP guideline, any person has upper respiratory infection symptoms, fever, diarrhoea or vomiting should be refrained from school until they are recovered.
Please be reminded that we ask students who experience fevers, diarrhoea or vomiting should remain at home until 48 hours after their last episode.

Regarding the "Study on the Provision of International School Places in Hong Kong" we sent earlier, EDB now has provided an online link: https://policy21.org/intschool/school/index.php?page=questionnaire_parent&id=kaAlafEmhbfVlRZw3HfSxA%3D%3D. This link may serve as a convenient alternative for parents to complete the survey.
We encourage our parents to provide your views by completing the online survey by the end of November 2022.
Thank you.

Dear parents,
We are looking forward to welcoming you to KJS for our 3 way conferences on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday afternoon we are aware that some families have early appointments and don't have time to travel home and then travel back to KJS. With this in mind if you have an early appointment you are welcome to meet your child in the 'Walkers Area" (outside Year 2) between 2:30 and 2:45 and wait with them on the ground floor playground until your appointment. There will not be any school supervision at this time of the day so supervision is the responsibility of the parents.
Kind regards,
KJS Senior Leadership Team

Dear year 6 Parents and Guardians,
We have been made aware from several parents of behaviour concerns regarding a WhatsApp group initiated by students in year 6.
WhatsApp is a chat application which can be used on a mobile phone or tablet; it lets you send messages, images and videos to friends. You can have one to one and group conversations. This letter is to make you aware that your child may be using WhatsApp without your knowledge and you should be mindful that the minimum age for WhatsApp is 13 or over. If you feel that your child needs to have WhatsApp, we would strongly suggest that you closely monitor the chats that your child is involved in.
‘There are several reasons why the minimum age for WhatsApp is 13, one of which is that you cannot always control if you're added to a group chat, or choose what you receive from others. For more information on WhatsApp, I recommend this website written specifically for parents: https://parentzone.org.uk/article/whatsapp’
Along with this message to our parent community, our teachers will also be speaking with the students regarding their use of Whatsapp and their use of social media, ensuring that they are also aware of the current guidelines, restrictions and potential issues surrounding this chat application. Through our Relationships Education and Sexuality curriculum we will reinforce the key ideas around safety, both in the physical and online environment. We have also been working with our PTA in securing an expert who will be hosting a webinar for interested parents around digital safety. Dates are yet to be determined.
Additionally you might want to take a look at Common Sense Media for parents as it is an excellent resource to support parents to know what to do in today’s fast changing world. This is how they have reviewed the Whatsapp Messenger App.
If you see something that concerns you regarding your child’s online interactions with other KJS students, then please do the following;

Dear Parents,
We are excited to start the KJS Green Dragons club this year. The club will mainly focus on gardening activities however may incorporate other environment learning and initiatives.
The club will meet every Wednesday, from 2:45-3:45, in the Sky Garden.
Sign up is open on Gateway from 2nd - 9th November. We understand that some children have also signed up for clubs, such as Running Club, which may overlap our Garden Club time. Please feel free to allow your children to join our Garden Club anyways. We are happy to have them attend Garden Club whenever their other club finishes.
Please also note that gardening can get a little dirty and it is advised for students to bring a change of shirt or wear an over shirt in order to protect their uniforms.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at school.
Kind regards,

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
KJS Library would like to host two in-person workshops to help you navigate your way through our Library, Library Splat page and Library Orbit page.
What’s the difference between Splat and Orbit page?
How will this help in my child’s learning?
How can I improve my child’s literacy? Are there tools to support reading at home?
How can I support my child during PYPx? What online research databases are there?
We'll try to answer some of these questions and more. Come in person to the library on Monday, November 14th, 2022. There will be two sessions:
8:30-9:30
1:30-2:30

Dear KJS Families,
Three-way conferences enable dialogue between students, parents and teachers. Everyone meets to discuss the student’s learning and targets with the student taking an equal and active role. A three-way conference is 15 minutes in length and this year will be held in person.
This form of reporting aligns with our AAROW's of success, particularly Agency and Achievement as it gives students an opportunity to share their growth as learners. Through this process the children will develop competency as assessment-capable learners and demonstrate a growing understanding of their development as independent and agentic learners. As a parent or guardian, you will gain knowledge of assessment capability and a greater understanding of your child’s progress and next steps. Parents, staff and students collaborate to achieve success for every child.
Three-Way Conferences Overview
All conferences and sessions will be held in person on 10/11 (3-6 p.m.) and 11/11 (all day, no school for students)
The Gateway will be used for sign-up from 5 pm on Monday 31st October for parents of Year 1 students and those families who have multiple children in school (sibling priority)
All other parents can sign up from 5pm on Tuesday 1st November
All appointments are 15 minutes in length.
The Chinese team will hold Year 1 conferences
The PE and Music teams will run practical sessions for Year 1 and 2 parents throughout the day. There is no booking required. You can visit these before or after your meeting with the class teacher. (We will expand these to other Year groups in future conference days)
School Entry
To enter school for the meeting we require all visitors to do the two following things;
Complete a negative RAT test on the day of the meeting
Use the Leave Home Safe app to scan into school. Parents must present with the ‘Blue” code
Kind regards,
Senior Leadership Team

These can be used as pick up cards when necessary or outside of school e.g. competition entries or any other reasons where you might get asked to provide student identity proof.
For new students who join the school after September, the student cards will be distributed to them in the next term.

Dear KJS families,
With the launch of the Government Vaccination Programme (GVP) starting on 6th October 2022, children studying in a primary school are recommended and eligible to receive subsidised seasonal influenza vaccination (SIV) to better protect themselves in the coming winter influenza season. SIV is one of the effective means to prevent seasonal influenza and its complications, as well as reduce influenza-related hospitalisation and death.
Please check with your family doctor or local clinic for enquiries and appointments for the subsidised SIV.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions.

This week our KJS community are supporting the NGO Redress, who recycle old clothing giving it a new lease of life, and distributing it to those in need.
On Friday, 14th October, we shall hold a Dress Casual Day, where students can come to school in recycled, up cycled or borrowed clothing. If you would like to get creative, please see the attached slideshow to find ideas to inspire you!
Our clothing collection drive is also continuing this week, so keep unwanted clothing coming into school for our collection boxes.
Thank you for your support.

Dear year 1 and year 2 families,
As we mentioned in our previous communication, Mr. Fay and I will be running a presentation on Tuesday at 4:00pm, all about ‘Play at KJS’.
The presentation will last roughly 45 minutes and will be held on Zoom.
The Zoom link is here:

Meeting ID: 979 0020 2277
Passcode: 907397
We will be aiming to make this as interactive as possible, so your participation is key to making this a success. We will be using a platform called Mentimeter (http://www.menti.com) as this allows participants to actively engage with different parts of the presentation.
In order to be an active participant, you will need to have the Zoom link open on one device and login to http://www.menti.com on your mobile phone. We will explain the rest of this to you at the beginning of the presentation.
You do not need to sign up for the presentation but we do ask that you attend on time and try your best to have a separate device available so you can engage with different parts of the presentation via http://www.menti.com.
Have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Doucette & Mr. Fay
Did you know?
170 tonnes of clothing are sent to HK landfills daily!
Dear Parents,
Every piece of clothing thrown away is a huge waste. We know that some people do not have the time to go to various places in HK and donate their clothes, but we have a solution for that. We would like to introduce you to an eco-friendly clothing foundation called Redress.
Redress is a local HK NGO whose mission is to reduce textile waste in Hong Kong. They will take old or used clothing and give them to people in need.
KJS is supporting Redress by setting up a clothing drive during the month of October. In doing this we will be helping Redress with its mission of making HK more sustainable AND we will be making a positive difference!
What You Need to Know: When - 6th of October - 14th of October How - students coming to school can drop off clothes at school in the allocated boxes Where - boxes will be in front of the office and outside the school gate What -
|
The process is simple. Your kids bring old or used clothes to school and put them in the boxes placed outside the school gate or the office. Please make sure that all the clothes you donate are clean and are in good condition.
We hope that you understand what a big problem this is, and support your child in creating a brighter, greener future for HK!
Looking forward to your help!

Dear KJS Families,
Given the re-emerging CHP focus on COVID Close Contacts and the resulting class closures that have happened at other ESF schools, plans for the use of an external lunch provider at KJS have been put on hold for the time being.
I understand that this will not come as positive news for some families, however my top priorities are the safety of your children and doing everything possible to preserve in-person learning.
Once the situation changes then we will look to reinstate an external lunch provider at KJS.
Thank you for your support and patience.
Kind regards,
Acting Principal - Dr. Jamie Schmitz
Dear parents,
Y6 to Y7 Transfer Applications will open on 1 September 2022. If you wish your child to transfer to an ESF secondary school, you are required to submit a transfer application via Gateway between 1 September and 16 September 2022 as stated in this ESF website https://www.esf.edu.hk/year6-to-year7-key-dates/. Please click here for instructions.
ESF will process and allocate according to an “associated secondary school” for Y7 placement. The associated secondary school for KJS is King George V School (KGV). This means all KJS Y6 students will transfer to KGV for Y7 for the 2023/2024 school year after submitting a transfer application before the deadline, i.e. 16 September 2022. Allocation for secondary school will be by “associated secondary school” and NOT determined by the residential address.
For further details, please refer to this ESF website https://www.esf.edu.hk/year6-to-year7-key-dates/. For any questions, please contact the ESF Secondary School Admissions Team at secondary.admissions@esfcentre.edu.hk.

Dear Parents,
We are collaborating again with Faust to run an after school drama club for Year 4-6 students this term. The students who participated last year enjoyed the music theatre workshops and we hope to see more students be involved in experiencing the Expressive Arts. It is a wonderful way for students to meet others in the school and gain confidence in performing.
The PTA will kindly subsidize a portion of the fees for each student signing up to the drama club, the cost payable by parents will be $120 per child. Please sign up directly with Faust, click here or scan the QR code in the brochure below to fill in the google form to register; first come first served, limited to 30 students.

Dear KJS families,
You may have noticed that your child has come home with a new red folder in their school bag. These were ordered by our Chinese team and they will be used to keep all of the Chinese learning that needs to be taken out of the classroom.
In an effort to be sustainable, we will not be replacing these folders each year and the children will be expected to use them throughout their entire time at KJS.
We are currently working with the PTA to look at ordering additional ones in the event that some get lost or broken. Please note that the replacement for these will not be covered by the school.
Thank you,
The KJS Chinese Team
Dear KJS Families,
Please disregard the previous message sent yesterday regarding vaccination requirements for extra-curricular activities and refer to the updated information below. Thank you for your understanding.

From October 1st, 2022, 5-11 year-old students enrolled in extra-curricular activities must have received either three doses of the Sinovac vaccine or two doses of the BioNTech vaccine.
Please note that your child may still participate in extra-curricular activities if they have received two Sinovac doses on or before October 1st, 2022 and are still in the required waiting interval before a third dose is allowed.
If your child has recovered from COVID-19 before or after being vaccinated then they will require two Sinovac doses or one BioNTech dose from October 1st, 2022.

Dear Parents and KJS community,
It is a great pleasure to share with you the success so far of our recently implemented Recycling Station which has been generously supported by our PTA. Over the last year our staff and students have been putting systems in place to ensure we all make better habits and take action to make a positive difference in the world. If you are interested in the breakdown of our school recycling please click the link to see our recent recycling report.
In order for our efforts towards living and learning more sustainably to have the greatest impact, it is vital to involve as much of our school community as possible. I therefore ask for your support at home. Please ask your children to be involved in sorting, cleaning and recycling your recyclable household waste, where appropriate. This would also be a great opportunity to discuss the need to reduce our waste and make some family pledges to do so (e.g. reducing or removing the use of plastic wrap, buying loose fruit and vegetables, re-using shopping bags etc).
You can also help by sending your child to school with non-packaged snacks and lunches. This benefits both our planet and the health of your children. The links below have great ideas that you can use and share with your children, aunties and caregivers, however, please note that KJS is a NUT-FREE school. As always, the more you involve the children, the more they will learn about and support these healthy choices.

If you would like more information on healthy food choices to share with your family and caregivers, please send an email to gillian.hadley@kjs.edu.hk
Thank you for your support in making KJS a sustainable community that takes action to make a positive difference in the world. I look forward to sharing more success, tips, and information with you in the future.

Dear KJS Families,
Re: Smartwatches and Personal Belongings at School
I hope that you all had a safe, enjoyable, and relaxing weekend.
This is just a brief reminder regarding our stance on students bringing smartwatches and personal belongings to school.
Smartwatches have become far more commonplace over the last few years, and we appreciate that some parents want their children to wear them for contact reasons. Please note that smartwatches are not permitted to be worn during the school day so, if you would like your child to wear one, then please encourage them to place it in their school bag or hand it in and collect it from the classroom teacher.
Except in the case of a teacher request or personal items that are required for school (lunchboxes, drink bottles etc.), we strongly recommend that students do not bring personal belongings to school. If students choose to bring personal belongings to school then please note that we will not take any responsibility for the loss of or damage to these personal items. In accordance with this stance, it is also important to note that teachers will not engage in email exchanges regarding personal belongings.
We thank you for your understanding.

Dear Parents,
Greetings from the Music department! We look forward to another wonderful year of music learning at KJS.
Thank you for your patience while we get the information out to you regarding Music clubs at KJS for the 2022/23 academic year.
This year KJS has employed the services of a company to coordinate all of our music tutors. This will include processes for registration and for payment. This is taking a little while to set up but we are confident it will make our procedures much more efficient moving forward.
We will have more detailed information regarding the timescale in the coming weeks. Again, thanks in advance for your patience as we aim to improve our systems and provision at KJS.
Best regards,

Dear Parents,
Thank you for your continued efforts in completing Rapid Antigen Tests each morning and uploading the results.
Please be reminded that there are other illnesses that can be transmitted here at school and that if your child is feeling unwell with symptoms such as runny nose, coughs or sore throats, to consider keeping them at home even if their RAT is negative.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians that we ask that students who experience diarrhoea, vomiting or fevers should remain at home until 48 hours after their last episode.
I would like to thank you all for your help in keeping KJS a safe and healthy learning environment.

Dear Parents,
A warm welcome to you from the Kowloon Junior School Parent Teacher Association (KJS PTA). As a parent of Kowloon Junior School, your family will automatically become a member of the KJS PTA at the start of the new academic year.
Who We Are
The KJS PTA is a non-profit organisation with Parent and Teacher representatives, including members of our Senior Leadership Team, developed in accordance with the guidelines set out by ESF and our school. Our main objective is to promote a close partnership between families and the school, to take an active role in and enhance the learning experience of our children
and, if and when possible, raise funds for the further development of the school. Our objective is to grow and support a strong community between teachers, kids and their families through various events we organize with school & parents, through creating support communication about school life, news, happenings, through raising funds for more exciting and extra learning facilities kids can have at school.
What We Do
Meetings
We hold meetings once a month with the Principal, the Senior Leadership Team, Teachers and Parents to discuss developments at school, the management and running of PTA events as well as finances. It is a direct source of all news and also perfect moment to share questions, concerns & improvement suggestions from Parents.
Meetings are usually held on Monday or Tuesdays of every month either from 3pm or 4:30pm during term-time.
Uniform
KJS is phasing in a new school uniform - parents can access it by clicking the link: http://www.schooluniform.hk – welcome to check there the “MAIN PAGE” with new items and also the “SALE ITEMS” with old school uniform at very discounted prices (the old uniform is valid till the end of 2024).
As PTA will no longer be selling uniforms directly to parents, the existing uniform can be purchased through the above-mentioned school uniform website under “SALE ITEMS” with most of the items at VERY discounted prices and without a delivery charge. When orders are placed via the “SALE ITEMS” section, parents can pick these orders up from school or we can deliver them to your child’s classroom (during school hours) . Please note again that your child has the option of wearing the old uniform for the next two years, as the school and ESF has assured us that all children will transition over to the new uniform from August 2024.
• Please besides uniform we kindly remind you to purchase Two Compulsory Items that will need to be purchased from the “MAIN PAGE” on the same site:
i. Library Book Bag
ii. School Hat (in your child’s house colour) – we suggest you consider getting 2 hats as they tend to get lost easily. Therefore having name and child class on it will be highly important.
School Lunches
We coordinate a lunch service for our children by liaising with a contractor on behalf of the parents to offer the option of daily hot and fresh lunches. Due to the COVID –outbreak, however, hot lunches will not be served at school at the moment. We will update parents once EDB/ School give us the go-ahead to provide lunch services to our students. In the interim, you may access the link mentioned to look at our previous lunch menus http://www.kjs.edu.hk/lunch-order-menu/ . Our current contractor is Fit For Life that provides goods quality healthy yet tasty meals for the kids.
Events
We used to host a number of family-focused events, bringing the school community together and creating thid unique joyful atmosphere that kids can have besides their everyday learning and can share this joy and experience with their families – which is priceless. Such examples include the Mid-Autumn Festival Parade, a Family Bingo evening, the School Disco, a Quiz evening, Christmas sales, and our biggest event of the year, the KJS PTA Annual School Fair.
We are proud to say that KJS hosts one of the biggest school fairs amongst the ESF schools. It usually takes place in March and the entire school community gets involved. Our school fairs are normally filled with a stage full of performances by our students and teachers, as well as a Raffle Draw, the music teams and choirs, fun aspects like games, bouncy castles and giant slides, foods offered by our parent-and-teacher-run international food village, interactive activities like face painting, temporary tattoos and hair extensions, books and product sales donated by our parent body, a Charity bake sale and an auction. The PTA has managed to raise $80,000 for the school from the Raffle Draw which was used towards the investment of Maker Resources, namely technological and creative tools for the children, which will support Success for Every Child at KJS and the principals and qualities of our PYP school.
To get a glimpse of these fun-filled events and to see a full list of activities hosted by the PTA, please visit our page on the school website, under the caption ‘Life at KJS’.
What We Have Achieved So Far
As mentioned, one of the objective of the PTA is to support the school & enhance learning opportunities for kids at school and raise funds where possible. So far we have contributed towards:
• Prizes and providing support for various school competitions and events; • Establishing a fresh and hot meal service within the school;
• Equipping the multi-media room on the 4th floor;
• Purchasing outdoor sports equipment as well as gymnastics equipment; • Investing in and purchasing interactive outdoor play equipment for younger year groups; • Purchasing portable music platforms for the music department;
• Funding and continuously supporting the Living Classroom on the rooftop of the main building;
• Contributing to the development of Secret Gardens around the ground floor of the school;
• The investment in hands-on sustainable learning resources to promote sustainability at school; and
• Maker Resources (as stated previously in this letter) to help expand the kinds of learning resources available to the children.
How You Can Help and Get Involved
We are always looking for committed PTA committee members and volunteers. Please take a moment to fill out the attached form to let us know if you would like to get more involved with your children’s school life. It won’t take too much of your time, even if you work full time but willing to contribute with your voice, opinion and some events participation – it will be a great help for us and special opportunity for your to be specially connected with your child at school with teachers and the whole community!
Our Annual General Meeting will take place in September this year. Prior to that we will seek nominations to elect a new executive committee at the AGM. We hope to see more Year One parents actively involved in our committee. PTA meetings are a great way for you to meet parents from different year groups, learn about school updates and get involved in various PTA activities.
Our primary source of revenue is from membership fees and the surplus from school events organised throughout the year. Our membership fee is HK$500 per family for the year. Once again, please note that we are a non-profit organization.
We welcome you to the KJS family and look forward to seeing you soon, either in person or virtually at our AGM. I wish you and your families a wonderful summer!

It has come to my attention that some families would like two adults to attend the parent induction session from 10:30-11:50 a.m. on Tuesday 23/8. While I appreciate the motivation to expand the family experience on-campus at KJS, we are unable to accommodate any more adults at this time due to mandated COVID restrictions. We are still under the same set of directives that were in place on May 27th, 2022 when many of you visited the school for the transition sessions.
I apologise that we are unable to offer more at this stage and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Acting Principal
Dr. Jamie Schmitz
Dear Parents,
Please be kindly reminded that we can only invite 1 parent per student for this school visit due to the current pandemic in Hong Kong. Parents must do a RAT test on the day of the visit and scan the leave home safe app before entering, those with a yellow or red code are not permitted on site.
Sorry for your inconvenience and we are looking forward to meeting with you on campus very soon!
Best,
KJS Office

Supporting all learners to assess their learning and implement constructive next steps
To help us on our strategic learning journey, we continue to invest in the highly successful and heavily research-backed Visible Learning+ professional learning programme. We aim to continue our partnership with Corwin over the next two years to help us deeply understand and authentically embed our learning.
Finally, if you have a COVID vaccination update regarding your child then please share the information with us. Please refer to this manual for assistance.
We look forward to seeing your children at KJS on August 23rd.
